In October 1775, the formerly enslaved poet Phillis Wheatley sent George Washington a poem praising him as the new American Aeneas. Washington replied personally, invited her to his headquarters in Cambridge, and the exchange became one of the earliest public moments in which a Black writer addressed and was answered by the leadership of the Revolution.

Proceed, great chief, with virtue on thy side, / Thy ev'ry action let the goddess guide. / A crown, a mansion, and a throne that shine, / With gold unfading, WASHINGTON! be thine.
