Signed September 3, 1783, the Treaty of Paris ended the Revolutionary War on terms far more generous than Britain's negotiators expected: full recognition of American independence, fishing rights off Newfoundland, and a western border at the Mississippi. The American team — Adams, Franklin, and Jay — negotiated separately from France, against Congress's instructions, and won.

His Britannic Majesty acknowledges the said United States, viz., New Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, to be free, sovereign and independent States.
