Published anonymously in January 1776, Paine's 47-page pamphlet sold an estimated 120,000 copies in three months and made the case for independence in plain English aimed at farmers and apprentices. It collapsed the remaining colonial loyalty to the Crown and made the Declaration politically possible six months later.

Society in every state is a blessing, but Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one. The cause of America is in a great measure the cause of all mankind. A government of our own is our natural right.
